Description
The global market for eSAF was valued at US$ 3 million in the year 2024 and is projected to reach a revised size of US$ 3585 million by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 177.8% during the forecast period. eSAF, also sometimes called Power-to-Liquid (PtL) fuels, synthetic fuels, or Power-to-X, do not use direct organic compounds as feedstocks like other pathways do, and is therefore not a biofuel. Instead, this pathway uses captured CO2 (from industrial sources and direct air capture), renewable electricity, and clean hydrogen (e.g., from water) as feedstocks.
eSAF supports global efforts to decarbonize the aviation sector, which is a significant challenge due to the high energy demand and difficulty of electrifying large commercial aircraft. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and other aviation bodies have set ambitious goals to reduce aviation emissions to net-zero by 2050, and eSAF is seen as a crucial part of achieving this. eSAF represents the most promising SAF pathway in global efforts to decarbonize the aviation industry.

The aviation industry is under pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, but the higher cost of eSAF limits its use, especially when cheaper alternatives like conventional fossil jet fuel remain prevalent.
But the potential for eSAF to reach cost parity with conventional jet fuels is becoming more achievable as renewable energy costs continue to decline and carbon procurement methods evolve. With green hydrogen production becoming more affordable and innovative methods to source carbon from industrial waste gases, the production costs for eSAF are expected to decrease significantly in the coming years.
As these technologies mature, coupled with supportive legislation and policy frameworks (such as SAF blending mandates andeSAF can become a competitive and sustainable alternative to fossil jet fuel, making a crucial contribution to decarbonizing the aviation sector and achieving global net-zero goals.

The global market for eSAF was valued at US$ 3 million in the year 2024 and is projected to reach a revised size of US$ 3585 million by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 177.8% during the forecast period. eSAF, also sometimes called Power-to-Liquid (PtL) fuels, synthetic fuels, or Power-to-X, do not use direct organic compounds as feedstocks like other pathways do, and is therefore not a biofuel. Instead, this pathway uses captured CO2 (from industrial sources and direct air capture), renewable electricity, and clean hydrogen (e.g., from water) as feedstocks.
